hen I joined the university, I attended the Fresher’s Fair where different societies showcased what they offered and the benefits of being a member. Being very interested in cricket as a sporting activity and in dancing as well, I immediately joined Birmingham City University Men’s Cricket team and also the Ball Room and Latin/Hip-Hop Dance Society.
Also I was in charge of the Birmingham City University Games Society which was a community for students who had interests in programming and developing games; and also there was the fun part of meeting together to participate in gaming competitions (by playing different games like Fifa and the likes on consoles) where the winners were awarded with prizes. Being a member of other societies helped me establish and maintain social relationships with not just students who were studying the same course I was but also students from other departments.
This made me realise the importance being able to effectively balance one’s academic life with the social life. I would just like to use this medium to advise prospective undergraduates; it is important to maintain a social life while in the university. Although there is the academic stress but it is the social life you maintain that would help ease the stress from course works and from studying and having time to relax every now and then helps improve your ability to concentrate and focus on your studies.
