At that time (2013), Microsoft had just purchased rights to Nokia and so there were not many games in the Windows store because it was fairly new compared to Apple’s store or Android store. Microsoft then decided to organize this event to bring together a number of existing Unity3D games developers, giving them an opportunity to publish their games on the Windows store and every developer that successfully published their games got a free Nokia Lumia phone.
It was evident that some people would have issues with publishing their games, as their systems were not running a Windows operating system. To go through with the publishing, we had to begin by installing the Windows 8 OS and also the Microsoft Video Studio application on their systems. Then we took the developers through a step- by-step process on how to publish games in Windows store using Unity Game engine. Although it was only a day event, there were a lot of creative people that we were able to help publish their games. Overall, it was a very successful event as more than 200 games were published on the Windows store.
There were various options available for Unity games developer to port their games successfully on Windows/ Windows Phone platform:
- Pre-Built Windows laptops loaded with Unity Pro
- Copies of Parallel’s already configured with Unity Pro (if you’re a Mac user)
- Devices on mass to test and play with on the day, everything from 520’s to the new 6” 1520 and even some 2520 Win 8 tablets
- Windows Developer accounts and registrations
- Help and support from Unity3D officials and Microsoft staff/Windows Games Ambassador.
Unity3D games developers who managed to publish their games on windows store took home various rewards/stuff (subject to availability)
