n November 2013, I was selected with about 10 other undergraduate students to work on some PhD research projects. We were divided into groups and had to travel to Finland to later represent the different projects we were assigned to. Being the only developer, I had to create an application for the Sustainability project I was assigned to.
I started working on a sustainability application called SustApp that allowed users to see what different pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer were doing towards helping their communities in areas such as education, employability, environment and the likes. The reason for this application was to enable pharmacists and others to see which companies were actually helping their communities so they could purchase drugs from such companies. The overriding purpose for this was to encourage companies that were only passively involved (if at all) in developing their communities to be more active in doing so. In April 2014, we travelled to Finland to showcase the project alongside the application to other students from various countries and professional bodies. We all presented our projects in the Metropolitan Applied Science University in Helsinki, Finland in the first week.
After this, we were again split into groups as the organisers needed to see how well we could work with one another despite the difference in cultural backgrounds. Five projects were selected to progress to the next stage. At this stage, I was one of the only two programmers available and for that reason; I was asked to create a website to help improve the social life of elderly people between the ages of 50 and 70. The website was called SIMU (Senior Meet Up); it was designed for elderly people to access the internet and see what social events were going to be taking place nearby. If they were interested in attending, they could then buy their tickets (if it was required) via the website for such events. Also, an individual could create his or her own event on the website for other people who could be interested to see and participate in.
We spent three weeks in Finland and I met a lot of students from across the world, exchanged knowledge and experiences with them and also with other professionals. Overall, it was a very amazing and beneficial experience that helped improve my skills and knowledge in my area of specialization.
